Policy and Lobbying

The political arena is a major influence on the lives of older people in Northern Ireland and ACNI’s engagement with local decision-makers continues to be authoritative, informed and influential on issues such as the Older People’s Commissioner, community safety, fuel poverty and water charges.

In our lobbying and advocacy work we adopt the position of ‘critical friend’ supporting government when they have done well and are making progress on key issues, but also challenging hard where we see injustice and unfairness. One of our values is independence and this remains our paramount consideration in our relations with public bodies, policy makers and politicians.

ACNI actively promotes the interests of older people to decision-makers and influencers across the political spectrum and works hard to promote local campaigns, raise older people’s issues and concerns within the political agenda and influence policy.

Campaigns

The ACNI Policy Team develops campaigns to a) raise awareness of issues that are affecting older people in Northern Ireland and b) to influence decision-makers and influencers within local government to make policy decisions that benefit the older population here.
