Older People in Northern Ireland

In 2007, there were approximately 334,000 people over 60 years of age in Northern Ireland and 53,000 people over 80 years of age. Life expectancy for men in the region is 76.2 years and 81.4 years for women.

Between 2001 and 2041 it is anticipated that the population of Northern Ireland will increase from 1.689 to 1.723 million people, while over the same period, the total number of people of pensionable age will almost double from around 259,000 to 495,000. These statistics clearly demonstrate that we are becoming an older population.

The demographic ageing of society is a global phenomenon and one that will affect the economy, the labour market and will impact on areas such as housing demand, health care provision, learning and employment, nursing and care homes. ACNI understands fully the implications of these statistics for older people in Northern Ireland and continues to positively and effectively champion the rights of the older population here. ACNI works to ensure that public services and policies are fit for purpose and delivered to best level for older people.
