About Us

Age Concern Northern Ireland (ACNI) is an independent charity working with and for older people. For over 30 years we have been providing essential support services to older people including:

• Day & Domiciliary Care
• Advice & Information Services
• Community Development & Health Promotion Programmes.

ACNI also provides a voice for the older population in Northern Ireland by lobbying decision makers within local government and other influential organisations on the important issues affecting older people today.
The main priorities for ACNI are:

1. Defeating Ageism and Recognising Diversity
Ageism has a devastating effect on our lives. We will break the age barrier by helping improve the opportunities that support the independence and diversity of older people’s lives. We will fight to protect the rights of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged.

2. Reducing Poverty and Fighting Disadvantage
Half the older population in Northern Ireland lives on the breadline which has a crippling effect on their quality of life. We will fight to ensure that older people secure their rightful entitlements and we will campaign for an adequate income in retirement.

3. Promoting Effective Public Services
Public services need to deliver for older people irrespective of government structures. We will challenge government to develop and protect services that are needs-driven.

4. Addressing Social Exclusion and Community Safety
We tackle the exclusion of older people in Northern Ireland society and the consequences of social and health inequality which severely impacts on the older population. We will address the concerns of older people about safety in their homes and communities.
